There's always something wacky happening when you live in a motel, and P.T. (named after P. T. Barnum, of course) has grown up at the world's wackiest! When word gets out that the hottest teen idols in Hollywood (plus current YouTube sensation Kevin the Monkey!) will be filming their next movie—Beach Party Surf Monkey—right in St. Pete's Beach, Florida, P.T. and his friend Gloria know that the Wonderland would be the perfect location. Now they just have to convince the producers!

But when things start to go wrong (crazed fans? missing stars?), it will take all of Gloria's business genius and P.T.'s wild stories to save the movie before both it and the Wonderland are all washed up!

BONUS: Includes fun extras like P.T. and Gloria's Famous Fact-or-Fiction Quiz: Movie Edition

    Scary Tales

"When you live in a motel," I told my audience, "you never know when your neighbors might be fiendish jewel thieves!"

Like always, the whole cafeteria was hanging on my every word. Even the lunch ladies in their plastic shower caps had come out to hear what I'd say next. It was so quiet you could hear a straw squeak its way into a milk carton.

" 'Was it dangerous?' you ask. Of course it was! Was I afraid? Ha! Never!"

"How about when the tiger roared?" said my friend Gloria Ortega. "You looked pretty scared then."

I ignored her and kept going.

(That's one of the best things about being a storyteller. You don't have to put in all the details.)

"So there we were," I said, "me and Gloria, tailing the two most wanted men in all of Florida."

"The notorious Sneemer brothers!" added Gloria. "From Miami!"

"But we weren't after the two thieves," I said. "Oh, no. We wanted the jewels they'd stolen from the Miami Palm Tree Hotel. Diamonds! Emeralds! Rubies! Cubic zirconias!"

"That's not really a jewel," whispered Gloria.

    "Whatever," I whispered back.

And then I amped it up for my big finish, which, by the way, is the most important part of any story. "That's where the race is won," Grandpa always says. "At the finish line!"

It was time to give it everything I had.

"We tracked those two banditos all the way to Tampa International Airport, where we saw them check a bag at curbside—an aluminum attaché case with a combination lock! They'd had it handcuffed to their wrists all day long. . . ."

"And they just checked it at curbside?" asked Pinky Nelligan, one of my best buds, which means he should know better than to ask logical questions while I'm busy making stuff up.

"It was their big mistake," I told him. "Every crook makes one. Some return to the scene of the crime. Some brag to the wrong people. Some check their loot with a baggage handler when they should've kept it chained to their wrists!"

Pinky nodded. So did everybody else.

"Anyway, Gloria and I saw the airline baggage handler put the metal briefcase on a cart."

Gloria gave me a "We did?" look.

    It didn't slow me down.

"We chased that cart into the terminal, where another airline worker tossed the briefcase onto a conveyor belt. It disappeared behind some black rubber flaps. So I jumped onto the conveyor belt, too!"

"Didn't the security guards stop you?" asked Kate Mackenzie Williams.

"Oh, they tried," I said with a grin. "But I'm slippery when I want to be. I wasn't going to let them catch me! Even though it meant I might end up in the cargo hold of a jumbo jet headed to Timbuktu!"

    Story Time

"So did you catch up with the briefcase?" asked Kate.

"Oh, yeah," I said. "I followed it all the way out to the runway, where these two big dudes were loading up a plane. They wondered what I was doing riding on a conveyor belt with a bunch of suitcases. I told them I was a bounty hunter following a tip."

    "And they believed you?"

"They did when I showed them my badge."

I flashed a tin sheriff's deputy star, which has been crammed inside my wallet since forever. My grandpa used to give the badges away at our motel, the Wonderland, back when he had a ride-along train that looped through the parking lot. Masked...

P.T. Wilkie's adventures at the Wonderland Hotel continue following series opener Home Sweet Hotel (2016).P.T. and his Latina best pal, Gloria Ortega, are still riding high on the fame and fortune earned by their entanglement with the Sneemer brothers. P.T.'s mom and grandfather are financially sound for now, but it isn't long before the fancy hotel next door offers to buy the Wonderland in order to expand. The offer's a good one, and while his mom mulls it over, P.T. takes it upon himself to lure pop star Aidan Tyler and Academy Award-winning teen actress Cassie McGinty (both white) to shoot their surf movie Beach Party Surf Monkey at the Wonderland. Complications arise, high jinks ensue, and laughs abound. While this adventure is a bit less chaotic than the first, it remains just as enjoyable and interesting. It's compulsively readable, pulling readers in with smart characters, well-positioned dynamics, and a relentless pace. While the prior volume felt a bit episodic at times, this entry has a clear structure that builds and falls in all the right places. Plus, there's a monkey. The secondary characters are fleshed out well this time around, and the bothersome teacher Mr. Frumpkes makes a minimal appearance. A worthy sequel that improves upon the original and keeps the good times rolling. (Fiction. 8-12)

Gr 4-6-P.T. Wilkie and the crew from Home Sweet Motel return for a second adventure filled with drama, humor, and Hollywood flair. P.T. and his friend Gloria Ortega live in the Wonderland, a Florida beach motel run by P.T.'s grandfather Walt. The owner of the towering new hotel next door wants to buy the Wonderland. P.T. and Gloria hear about a movie being filmed in their neighborhood featuring two teen stars and YouTube performer Kevin the Monkey, and hoping to save the motel from the scheming hotel owner, they pitch the Wonderland as the perfect venue. Between P.T.'s plan and Gloria's business skills, the pair seem to have a chance, but then they encounter a selfish star, trouble from the rival hotel owner's daughter, and the monkey's surfing antics, leading to humorous and dramatic outcomes. The high jinks are nonstop, and the characters are engaging, if lightly sketched. Frequent cartoons and illustrations add to the humor and exaggerated characterizations. Fans of Grabenstein's other books, including several cowritten with James Patterson, will enjoy the humor, the fast-talking protagonist, and the escapades. VERDICT A quick, funny read, perfect for summer vacation.-Beth L. Meister, Milwaukee Jewish Day School, WI
